Cat6a is a performance category, not a guarantee of shielding: it defines 10GBASE-T performance over 100 m, while foil or braid is a separate construction choice, so no, not all Cat6a cable is shielded. Datasheets show the variety, from F/UTP with an overall foil (as on the Panduit TX6A and Molex PowerCat 6A) to U/FTP with each pair foil-lined (as on the RS PRO 113-5901 listing). On CCTV and PoE runs the shield only helps when it is continuous and correctly terminated from camera to switch, so check the terminations before you replace any cable.
What does "shielded Cat6a" actually mean, and is all Cat6a shielded?
No: Cat6a defines 10GBASE-T performance over 100 m, while shielding is a separate construction choice, so not all Cat6a cable is shielded. This is general guidance. The dossier only contains shielded examples, so it supports no claim about market share.
The code before the slash describes the overall screen and the code after it describes the pairs. "U" means unshielded and "F" means foil. By general convention "S" means braid.
| Code | Construction | Dossier example |
|---|---|---|
| F/UTP | Overall foil around four unscreened pairs | Panduit TX6A datasheet: 23 AWG conductors, overall metallic foil |
| F/UTP | Foil for alien crosstalk and EMI protection | Molex PowerCat 6A datasheet: aluminium foil |
| U/FTP | Foil on each pair, no overall screen | Cat6A U/FTP cable with RJ45 connectors: individually shielded pairs |
| F/FTP | Foil on each pair plus overall foil | Connectix TruLAN F/FTP outdoor cable |
| S/FTP | Pair foils plus an overall screen | 3 m orange S/FTP patch cable |
The RS PRO 113-5901 listing is a 100 m shielded Cat6a cable on a PVC jacket. Its description says each of the four twisted pairs is foil-wrapped, which is the U/FTP pattern. A kenable flat patch lead uses S/STP, with each twisted pair shielded, and is rated to 500 MHz.
Check the code on the datasheet, not just the word "shielded". A shielded Cat6a ethernet cable only performs as intended if the jacks and plugs are shielded too, such as our shielded Cat6A RJ45 pass-through plugs.
When is shielded Cat6a actually needed on a CCTV or PoE run?
Shield where there is a credible EMI/RFI source, not by default. Typical examples are factories, radio masts and electrical substations, where heavy plant or transmitters sit close to the cable route.
Shielding is a design choice, not a blanket requirement for every run. Whether it is needed on a given job comes down to the site survey and the written spec.
If you do shield, treat it as a system. Panduit states that its TX6A shielded cable must be installed as part of a complete shielded cabling system to reach certified 10GBASE-T performance. A shielded cable with unshielded jacks or plugs drops that benefit. For outdoor or duct runs, the Cat6A F/FTD duct-grade cable is one shielded option.
Symptom-to-first-check sequence
This is general installer guidance, not test data.
- Picture breakup, packet loss or link drops that vary with plant or transmitter activity point to interference. Log when the faults happen and compare them with machinery or transmitter schedules.
- Faults that are constant or random are more likely a termination or cable fault. Re-terminate and swap in a known-good patch lead first.
- On a shielded run, check shield continuity and bonding end to end before blaming the camera.
How do you ground and terminate shielded Cat6a without creating new problems?
The shield must run unbroken from plug to jack to patch panel or switch, and be earthed as the system design specifies. A shield that is cut or left floating at a connector gives you the cost of shielded cable with none of the benefit, as a general rule of thumb. The question comes up often enough that a forum thread titled "CAT6A – not grounded at either end, plastic connectors and a floating shield" exists on Audio Science Review, though we are not drawing conclusions from it.
Termination checklist
- Use shielded connectors throughout. The CAT6A shielded RJ45 pass-through plugs, 200 pack are a shielded plug option for Cat6A terminations. A plastic plug on a foil-screened cable breaks the screen at the very point the cable is handled most.
- Keep the chain shielded at the outlet too. Pair shielded plugs with shielded jacks and shielded patch panels. One unshielded component in the path interrupts the shield.
- Match the cable to the system. Panduit's TX6A datasheet states its shielded cable must be installed as part of a complete shielded cabling system to achieve certified 10GBASE-T performance. For external runs, the Connectix TruLAN F/FTP outdoor cable is one foil-screened option.
- Earth once, as designed. Where and how the shield is bonded is a system-design decision. Your electrician or installer should confirm it against the project specification and BS 7671, rather than improvising at the rack.
- Test continuity after termination. Check that the screen is continuous end to end before the cable is commissioned, not after cameras start dropping.
We supply the components; fitting and earthing are for your own installer. Trade customers can open a trade account to see pricing, and in-stock orders placed before 4pm are dispatched the same working day.
Which shield construction suits which job: F/UTP, U/FTP or F/FTP?
Choose by interference path and earthing plan: the evidence below describes each construction, but none of it shows one winning outright. An overall foil, per-pair foils and both together protect against different things.
| Example | Construction | What the source states |
|---|---|---|
| Panduit TX6A | F/UTP | 23 AWG conductors, one overall foil around all four pairs |
| Molex PowerCat 6A | F/UTP | Aluminium foil, with alien crosstalk resistance |
| RS PRO 113-5901 | U/FTP | Foil on each pair, Euroclass Eca, ISO/IEC 11801 |
| Kenable flat lead | S/STP | 32 AWG, 500 MHz, patch lead |
Panduit states that its cable must be installed as part of a complete shielded TX6A system to reach certified 10GBASE-T performance. That is a reason to plan jacks, plugs and bonding together rather than mixing parts.
Flat 32 AWG leads like the Kenable one suit short patching, not permanent links; that is general installation guidance, not a datasheet claim.
Our catalogue by use case
- External and duct runs: Connectix TruLAN F/FTP outdoor Cat6A has a PE sheath for CCTV and campus links, and the Cat6A duct grade 23AWG F/FTD is listed for 10Gbps to 100m and PoE.
- Internal pre-terminated runs: the Cat6A U/FTP cable with RJ45 connectors has an LSFH jacket and individually shielded pairs.
- Colour-coded patching: the 3m orange S/FTP lead suits offices and server rooms.
Pricing is shown to approved accounts; you can open a trade account.
What should you stock for shielded runs, and how do you cost them?
Stock a matched set (cable, shielded plugs, shielded jacks, shielded patch leads and an earthing method) and quote the whole system rather than the drum. A run is only as shielded as its weakest part.
Cost follows the full set, and three things move it most:
- Cable construction. Our range includes Cat6A F/FTD 23AWG duct-grade cable and Connectix TruLAN F/FTP outdoor cable. The two differ in construction and intended use, so check your account pricing for each when you quote.
- Pack sizes. Terminations are bought in bulk, for example a 200-pack of shielded pass-through plugs. Count the plugs and jacks a job needs before you pick the quantity.
- Test time. Testing each terminated link takes labour, so build it into the quote.
We show no prices here because trade pricing is visible only to approved accounts.
Trade supply
