PoE & voltage drop calculator
Before any cable is pulled, it is worth knowing whether the run will carry the camera. This calculator checks a PoE run against the 100m limit and the power budget, works out the 12V voltage drop over copper, and explains the remedy when a run falls short.
The run will work
- At 30m, the run sits inside the 100m Ethernet limit.
- A 6W camera sits within the 12.95W device budget of 802.3af (PoE), leaving 6.9W in reserve.
- The switch total deserves a check as well: eight cameras at full draw ask for more than many 8-port switches can share across all their ports.

The port count is rarely the constraint. What runs out first is the switch’s total PoE budget, so compare it with the sum of your cameras rather than with the per-port rating.
