Holding force is quoted in kilograms and is a straight-line pull on a perfectly aligned armature. A 280kg unit suits a light internal timber door; a main entrance in an office or a block wants 500kg; a double door needs a 1000kg twin unit so both leaves hold. Outdoor gates need a weatherproofed body and stainless fixings — a standard indoor maglock on a gate corrodes within a season.
Most callbacks are alignment, not force. The armature must sit flat against the magnet with no packing shim doing the work; a Z-and-L bracket set handles inward-opening doors and glass doors need the correct glass-door bracket rather than drilled fixings. Leave the armature slightly floating on its rubber washer so it can self-align as the door closes.
Every maglock needs a legal way out. A request-to-exit button releases the door for normal use, and a break-glass unit in the lock power line is what satisfies a fire officer on an escape route. Wire the break-glass so it cuts power to the lock directly, not through the controller — a controller that has crashed must not be able to hold a fire door shut.
As a rule of thumb: 280kg for a light internal door, 500kg for a main entrance or a communal door, and a 1000kg double unit for a pair of doors. Force is not the whole story — alignment and bracketry decide whether the rated force is actually achieved.
Only with a compliant release: a break-glass unit that removes power from the lock directly, plus a request-to-exit device, and in many cases a link to the fire alarm so the door drops on activation. Local fire officer requirements vary, so confirm the arrangement before you install.
A Z-and-L bracket set. The Z carries the armature on the door leaf and the L drops the magnet from the frame so the two meet flat. Glass doors take a dedicated glass-door bracket that clamps rather than drills.
